Insulating Masonry Walls
Concrete block wall insulation is something most Palm Bay homeowners only think about during a remodel, and that is the right time. Block walls soak up afternoon sun on the west and south sides and release that heat into the house into the evening. Many older homes have only a thin layer of furring and foil or foam board on the inside of the block. When drywall comes off for a remodel, kitchen redo, addition or garage conversion, the wall is open and can be insulated properly.
Closed-cell foam on block
Closed-cell foam sprayed directly on the inside face of the block bonds to it, fills the uneven surface and the gaps around furring, and does not absorb water. HomeGuide rates it at R-5 to R-7 per inch, so it reaches a useful R-value in the shallow space between furring strips. Open-cell foam is not a good fit against masonry because it can hold moisture against the wall.
Garage conversions
Turning a garage into living space is common, and garage walls usually have no insulation at all. Code for the converted room will require insulation and air sealing to meet the energy code, and the garage door opening gets framed in. We insulate the block walls and the new framed walls together so the room performs like the rest of the house.
Additions and frame walls
Wood-frame additions are held to R-13 in Zone 2 under Florida's 2023 energy code. Open-cell foam in a 2x4 wall reaches about that level and seals around wiring and boxes at the same time. We size each wall to its target and list it on the quote.
Permits
Remodels, additions and garage conversions in Palm Bay and Brevard County generally require permits, and insulation is inspected before drywall. We work with your contractor's schedule so the inspection happens on time.
Closed walls
If the walls are finished and not being opened, block walls are hard to improve from inside without tearing out drywall. In that case, the attic is almost always the better place to spend money first.

Concrete Block Wall Insulation Questions
Can block walls be insulated without removing drywall?
Not well. The best time is during a remodel when walls are open.
Why closed-cell on block?
It bonds to masonry, does not absorb water and gets more R-value in a thin space.
Does a garage conversion need insulation?
Yes. The new living space must meet the energy code, including insulation and air sealing.
What R-value do frame walls need?
Florida's 2023 energy code lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in Zone 2.
