Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Is spray foam insulation worth it in Florida?

Often, when the air handler and ducts are in the attic, because foam on the roof deck brings them into the cooled space. For an open attic with ducts in good shape, sealing and blowing in loose fill usually reaches the same R-value for less. We price both.

What can spray foam reach for R-value?

Closed-cell foam is rated R-5 to R-7 per inch by HomeGuide and open-cell R-3.5 to R-3.7. Total R-value depends on thickness, so the quote lists both.

Can mold grow behind spray foam insulation?

Foam is not food for mold, but moisture trapped by a roof leak can cause problems behind any insulation. We fix leaks first and choose the foam with moisture in mind.

What R-value should a Palm Bay attic have?

Florida's 2023 energy code sets R-38 for ceilings in Zone 2. ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for an existing Zone 2 attic with no insulation.

Does FPL offer an insulation rebate?

FPL's program standards effective September 1, 2025 list a $220 ceiling insulation rebate when existing insulation is below R-8 and a participating contractor does the work. Check FPL's current terms before your job.

Who manufactures spray foam insulation?

Several chemical companies make the two-part foam systems installers use. For your home, the right foam type, thickness and any required thermal barrier matter more than the brand.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Open cell or closed cell for a Florida roof deck?

Open-cell is the common choice for roof decks here; it is less expensive per inch and lets a roof leak show. Closed-cell suits tight spaces and metal buildings.

Does spray foam void a roof warranty or cause rot?

Foam over a sound, dry roof deck does not cause rot. Problems come from foam over leaks. Ask your roofer about their warranty terms before foaming.

How long do I stay out after spraying?

HomeGuide says 24 hours or more. We confirm timing for your product.

Do I need a thermal barrier over foam?

In many spaces, yes. It depends on how the space is used and accessed. We explain what applies before the job.

Unvented Attic & Roof Deck Foam Questions

What is an unvented attic?

An attic insulated at the roof deck with its vents closed, so it becomes part of the conditioned space.

Will a sealed attic get humid?

It stays closer to indoor conditions, but some homes need a small amount of conditioned air supplied to the attic. We look at your system.

Can I still get a roof inspection later?

Inspectors may want to see the deck. Open-cell foam can be cut back in spots if needed. Ask your insurer about any requirements.

How long does it take?

Usually one to two days including prep and cure.

Blown-In Attic Insulation Questions

Is fiberglass or cellulose better in Florida?

Both work over a sealed ceiling. Fiberglass resists moisture and settles less; cellulose is denser.

How do I qualify for the FPL rebate?

FPL's standards require existing ceiling insulation below R-8 and a FPL participating contractor. Check FPL's current terms.

Can you blow insulation over my old insulation?

Yes, if it is dry and clean.

How long does it take?

Usually a day.

Concrete Block Wall Insulation Questions

Can block walls be insulated without removing drywall?

Not well. The best time is during a remodel when walls are open.

Why closed-cell on block?

It bonds to masonry, does not absorb water and gets more R-value in a thin space.

Does a garage conversion need insulation?

Yes. The new living space must meet the energy code, including insulation and air sealing.

What R-value do frame walls need?

Florida's 2023 energy code lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in Zone 2.

Metal Building & Pole Barn Insulation Questions

Will foam stop my metal building from sweating?

Yes. Closed-cell foam keeps humid air off the cold steel.

Can foam go over old fiberglass?

Usually the old faced fiberglass comes down so foam bonds to the steel.

Does foam help with rain noise?

Yes, closed-cell foam on the panels dampens it noticeably.

Do I need a permit?

Insulating usually does not change much, but converting to living space can. Check with your building office.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions

Should wet insulation be replaced?

Yes. Once it has been soaked, it usually performs poorly and can hold moisture. Fix the leak first.

Do I need removal after a new roof?

Not always. If the insulation stayed dry and even, it can be topped up.

What about roof rats in the attic?

Contaminated insulation should come out. Have entry points sealed by pest control.

Can you remove vermiculite?

Not before testing. Asbestos goes to a licensed abatement contractor.
