From Coquina Ledges to New Subdivisions

Spray Foam Insulation in Rockledge covers the widest range of home ages in Brevard. Rockledge was incorporated on August 7, 1887, the oldest incorporated municipality in the county. Its name comes from coquina rock ledges along the Indian River. Rockledge Drive, lined with century-old oaks, is part of the Indian River Lagoon Scenic Highway.

Old and new

The city had 27,678 residents and 12,251 housing units in 2020, and annexed land west of I-95 in 2022 and 2023. That means older riverfront homes, mid-century neighborhoods and brand-new subdivisions all in one city.

Older homes

Historic homes along the river often have wood framing, raised floors, tall ceilings and little insulation. Balloon framing can leave wall cavities open to the attic. Sealing the tops of those cavities, insulating the attic and in some cases the floor, makes the biggest difference without changing the house's character.

Mid-century and newer homes

Mid-century block homes usually need attic sealing and more insulation. Newer homes west of I-95 have better baselines but still benefit from sealing hatches, lights and garage ceilings, and from considering roof-deck foam where the air handler is in the attic.

Traffic

U.S. 1 was widened to six lanes in 2010 and carries about 45,000 vehicles a day through Rockledge. Open-cell foam in walls and ceilings of homes near the corridor helps with noise as well as heat.

Code

Brevard County is Climate Zone 2A. Florida's 2023 energy code sets R-38 for ceilings.

Raised floors

Older riverfront homes on piers can lose cooling through the floor, and humid air moves up through gaps around plumbing. Closed-cell foam under the floor seals and insulates in one pass and does not absorb water.

St. Johns side

The city lies between the lagoon to the east and the St. Johns River to the west, and newer neighborhoods west of I-95 sit closer to that side. Those homes often have the newest construction, with good baselines, but we still find gaps at hatches, recessed lights and garage ceilings.
