Insulating the Port Malabar Grid
Spray Foam Insulation in Palm Bay usually starts with a house from the city's long building boom. General Development Corporation began buying and platting land for the Port Malabar residential project in 1959, and Palm Bay incorporated on January 16, 1960, with 2,808 residents. The 2020 census counted 119,760, up from 103,190 in 2010, across about 89.6 square miles. Most of that growth was single-family homes on platted lots.
What these homes have in common
Many Palm Bay houses are single-story homes on a slab, often with block walls, an attic overhead, and the air handler and ducts up in that attic. Insulation in older homes is often a few inches of settled fiberglass, disturbed over the years by cable, alarm and HVAC work. Gaps around ceiling lights, plumbing vents and the hatch let hot, humid attic air into the house. In summer, the AC fights that all day.
Water everywhere
In the 1920s a drainage district dug 80 canals totaling 180 miles to drain about 40,000 acres of swamp, and the city still drains through that canal system. Palm Bay averages 55.55 inches of precipitation a year, with September the wettest month at 7.95 inches. Humidity is constant. That is why we check for roof leaks and wet insulation before recommending anything, and why we pick foam types with moisture in mind.
Hurricane Jeanne
The NWS storm survey for Hurricane Jeanne in September 2004 lists a 74-knot peak wind at the Palm Bay cooperative station and 8.93 inches of rain, the highest of the Brevard gauge totals in the survey. Homes that had roof damage then, or in later storms, sometimes kept insulation that had been soaked.
Newer homes
Voters approved a $150 million road bond in 2018, and in the west part of the city many roads west of DeGroodt Road are still unpaved. Homes built in recent years are built to the current energy code with an R-38 ceiling target and a blower-door test, but bonus rooms, garage ceilings and attic hatches are still common weak spots.
FPL rebate
FPL's ceiling insulation program standards, effective September 1, 2025, list a $220 rebate for homes with existing ceiling insulation below R-8, installed by a participating contractor. Check FPL's current program before your job.
Wet-season water tables
Myakka fine sand, Florida's state soil, covers much of the flatwoods of peninsular Florida; the USDA series description calls it poorly drained, with a water table within 18 inches for one to four months in most years. That matters for insulation in one way: foam and other insulation should stay off the ground and away from the slab edge where termite inspection gaps are required, and any moisture problem near the foundation should be solved before anything gets covered.

Palm Bay Questions
My Palm Bay house was built in the 1980s. Is the attic insulation enough?
Often not. Many homes from that era have settled insulation well below R-38. We measure and tell you.
Is roof-deck foam worth it for a Palm Bay house?
It can be when the air handler and ducts are in the attic. We price it alongside sealing and blown-in.
Do you work in southwest Palm Bay?
Yes, across the whole city including the newer areas.
Can I use the FPL rebate?
If your existing ceiling insulation is below R-8 and a participating contractor installs it. Check FPL's terms first.
Should foam go on the outside of my slab or foundation?
Usually not here. Florida's code restricts foam below grade in heavy termite areas and calls for a gap between foam and soil, so we keep foam off the ground.
